The reflection of a person as he works through there day with the words and activities that make them either work towards Jannah or those words and activities that make them work towards jahannum, is the reason why most people choose to destroy themselves and do not fear the hour when they will be standing before Allah SWT.
A person that has no fear of standing before Allah for all that they have so far done throughout their lives are obviously not holding themselves to account for the wrong doing that they persist in. If they do not even believe in the last hour there moral compass is based on societal values which are prevalent in immorality and indecency as is seen throughout the past and the thousands of years that have already passed by.
Without guidance from the Creator and having values that are based on what the Creator knows better about the creation rather than those that think of each other as a means to suggest according to nature. As the very nature of most people is to listen to the whims, desires and caprices of the evil nature that whispers to them within their very hearts from the doubtful and hopeless one that wants to seek them fall from their elevated place at birth to reaching a point of not trying to see the virtues of self restraint and those aspects that are of a part of the human that are fighting greater battles with the various aspects of evil desires.
Perhaps it is because they fear loss of their own life due to loving the creation the dunya which is entirely an illusion of grandeur yet in reality is entirely worthless. The human heart captures the soul of a person and it is this divine inspired soul that makes a person reach a place amongst the closeness to the Creator.
As it is evident that the heart of a person carries all emotions, speech, thought and action, what the heart desires is to have that which it needs, yet is misled by the self. The nafs battles with the soul within the heart. And most people listen to the wrong choices that the nafs the self inclines it towards.
However there are a select group of people that fear the last hour when they will be standing before Allah and dread the conversation between themselves and the Creator, as the Creator already knows that which is apparent and that which is hidden. Also that which a person causes and that they do not know or are aware of that may lead to a point where there really is nothing that can be said to the Creator other than I tried to be with your command yet my honesty sometimes led me to a point where no matter what I say there are no excuses, it is only everything as the Creator says is true and the rest of us are no good at most aspects of living amongst the creation. There can be no lies spoken to the Creator, there can be no deception to the One that is the Truth. There can be no deviation or blaming anyone else, as a person is entirely responsible for everything that they say and act upon this earth and is also responsible for their immediate family.
One cannot hide any aspect within the heart from the Creator, and standing before the One who will be in severe Anger and Wrath on that Day, a person has to have firm faith and hope that the most loving and forgiving Allah SWT does not take them to account for any aspect of their life, for if any part of a life is questioned in detail a person has already been destroyed unless Allah wills otherwise.
Therefore it is highly recommended to set your entire affairs in order with people and with the rights of Allah before the last hour, otherwise it will require a painful torment for as long as Allah wills. A person needs to seek the correct way to understand, acquire and speak that which is truthful so that they are when able to correct their lives through not giving into the desires and whims and caprices of the nafs they are able to bring their soul inspired heart to the last hour as a sound heart that is seeking the face of Allah and is accepted by Allah SWT.
Yet it is the conquest of the heart that determines a persons ability to overcome their hurdles and enjoy this short lived life with good intentions having truthful good speech and followed by action that will take them to Jannah. It is neither the reward nor the punishment that is the driving force, but to seek beneficial knowledge that will make the path to Jannah easy and possibly a one way ticket to a place under the Lote tree. So as for the vain desires do not give into them and fear the day of standing before Allah SWT.
This earth is not worth it, this life is difficult yet worthwhile and enjoyable within the framework of the guidance and limits set by Allah the purposes of Shariah are enough for a person to seek the face of Allah.
