The Arabic word Amanah (أمانة) broadly means trust, reliability, loyalty, integrity, and responsibility. It is a fundamental and extensive concept in Islam that covers moral, social, financial, and religious obligations to be fulfilled with honesty and sincerity.
Core Meaning and Origin
The word Amanah is derived from the Arabic root ʾ-m-n (أ-م-ن), which signifies security, safety, and trustworthiness. This root also gives rise to words like Iman (faith or belief) and Al-Amin (The Trustworthy), an honorific title given to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) even before his prophethood, highlighting its deep connection to a believer’s character.
Dimensions of Amanah
Amanah has two main dimensions: towards Allah (SWT) and towards people (and oneself).
Amanah Towards Allah (SWT): This is the highest form of trust, involving the moral duty to acknowledge Allah’s (SWT) sovereignty and follow His commands as found in the Quran and Sunnah. It includes practices like prayer, fasting, and using one’s gifts in ways that please Him.
Amanah Towards People (and oneself): This entails honesty and fulfilling responsibilities in interactions with others. Examples include returning borrowed items, keeping promises, safeguarding secrets, being fair, and caring for one’s own well-being.
Amanah is obedience to Allah SWT and this trust was first offered to the heavens and the earth and the mountains however out of deep respect for Allah SWT and the fear of not being able to fulfill the obligatory duties involved with Amanah the heavens, earth and the mountains refused to undertake this trust.
So this trust was offered to mankind and man inquired from Allah SWT what does it entail, and he was told that you will be rewarded for being good and punished for not fulfilling the trust or in other words being neglectful and evil. Man was hasty, weak, unjust and ignorant in undertaking the command of Allah. For example, part of the trust was that woman was entrusted with her own chastity and the majority of them failed in this trust. Choosing immoral or sinful ways of the life lived with men out of the sacredness within the boundaries of marriage. Other aspects of Amanah is prayer, fasting and ghusl the obligatory bathing after sexual impurity.
The responsibility and acceptance of the commands and prohibitions with their conditions is part of the trust where fulfillment is rewarded and neglect is punished. That is why most of mankind is weak, unjust and ignorant except for those whom Allah helps.
Amanah as we can see from history and even now and in the future will be taken away amongst a lot of people particularly those who have no faith or are unfaithful. There are four aspects if attained then whatever you miss in the world will not matter. These are:
- Preserving trust (towards Allah SWT and the people and oneself)
- Speaking the truth
- Being of good character
- Moderation in eating
Allah SWT will punish the idolators, the hypocrites and the disbelievers for not fulfilling the trust or Amanah that is part of what makes an individual fulfilling its obligatory duties to Allah and to the people into a sound individual amongst their time spent on earth.
Those that believe in Allah SWT, the angels, the books of Allah, the messengers and those who obey Allah SWT and the messenger then Allah SWT will forgive and be merciful to them.
